For years, we followed the path most people are expected to follow. We worked, maintained a home, collected possessions, handled responsibilities, and waited for the next vacation to give us a brief taste of adventure. There was nothing inherently wrong with that life, but eventually we had to admit something important: it was no longer the life we wanted.
We are Michael and Kristal Bourg, and we are working toward a goal that once felt more like a daydream than a plan. By June 2027, we want to be living full-time on a sailboat, waking up with the water outside our door and letting curiosity help choose the next destination.
We Want More Than a Change of Scenery
This decision is not simply about moving from a house to a boat. We want to change the way we experience life. We want fewer days spent accumulating things and more days spent collecting stories. We want to sail, scuba dive, search for hidden treasure, work on boats, create things with our hands, and meet interesting people whose lives look different from our own.
The ocean has a way of putting everything into perspective. Beneath the surface, the noise of everyday life fades away. Under sail, progress depends on patience, preparation, weather, and a willingness to adapt. Those are not inconveniences to us; they are part of what makes the life appealing.
Two Different Backgrounds, One Shared Dream
Michael spent years in the safety profession after earning a master’s degree in Safety, Security, and Emergency Management. That experience taught him to recognize hazards, prepare for problems, and respect the difference between a bold decision and a careless one. Those lessons will matter aboard a boat, where maintenance, weather, emergency planning, and good judgment are part of everyday life.
Kristal is studying marine biology and marine conservation. Her interest in the ocean goes far beyond enjoying a pretty view. She wants to better understand marine life, fragile ecosystems, and the responsibility we all share for protecting the waters we explore.
Together, we share a love of diving, travel, treasure hunting, learning, and hands-on projects. A sailboat brings those interests together in a way no ordinary home ever could.
Choosing Experiences Over Possessions
Making this dream real requires us to let go of a great deal. We are preparing to sell most of what we own, move temporarily into an RV, find a forever home for our two pigs with friends, repair the house, and eventually sell it. Each of those steps takes time, money, and emotional energy.
We know boat life will not be a permanent vacation. There will be uncomfortable weather, broken equipment, expensive repairs, difficult passages, and days when the dream feels more like work. We are not chasing an illusion of effortless freedom. We are choosing a life whose hard work feels connected to something meaningful.
Why Now?
There is always a reason to wait. We could wait for a better market, a larger budget, a newer boat, more experience, or a moment when every uncertainty has disappeared. But that perfect moment is unlikely to arrive on its own.
Our target of June 2027 gives us a deadline and a direction. It turns “someday” into a list of decisions we can act on now. Every item sold, every dollar added to the boat budget, every lesson learned, and every potential catamaran researched moves us closer.
Welcome Aboard the Journey
Gypsea Bleu is where we will share the entire process—not only the sunsets and clear water, but also the budgets, compromises, mistakes, repairs, doubts, and discoveries. We are beginning before we own the boat because the journey does not start on moving day. It has already started.
We do not know exactly where the water will carry us, but we know what we want our life to hold: blue water, hidden treasure, meaningful work, new friendships, and adventures worth remembering. This is our decision to stop waiting for that life and begin building it.
