It is easy to say that experiences matter more than possessions. It is much harder to stand in a room filled with years of memories and decide what stays, what sells, what gets donated, and what we are finally ready to release.
As part of our plan to live aboard a sailboat by June 2027, we are preparing to sell almost everything we own. This is not a weekend decluttering project. It is a major step from a full-sized house to an RV and, eventually, to a catamaran where every item must earn the space it occupies.
Our Belongings Represent More Than Things
A house slowly fills without anyone making a deliberate decision for it to happen. Furniture, tools, clothing, keepsakes, hobby equipment, household supplies, and boxes saved for “one day” gradually claim closets, garages, shelves, and spare rooms. Many objects are useful. Some carry memories. Others remain only because getting rid of them requires a decision.
Downsizing forces us to look closely at the difference between owning something and needing it. It also makes us ask whether an item supports the life we are building or keeps us tied to the one we are leaving.
Why We Are Moving Into an RV First
Our first major transition will be from the house into an RV located on friends’ land. That move gives us a practical place to live while we finish repairs and prepare the house for sale. It also creates a smaller space that will make our remaining possessions impossible to ignore.
The RV is a rehearsal for boat life. We will have to live with limited storage, plan purchases more carefully, and become comfortable without rooms full of backups. If an item does not fit in the RV—and will not have a clear purpose on the boat—it probably does not belong in our future.
A Forever Farm for Our Pigs
One of the most personal parts of the transition involves our two pigs. They cannot come with us on a sailboat, so they will move to their forever farm at our friends’ home. Knowing they will be with people we trust makes the decision possible, but it does not make it emotionless.
This step is a reminder that chasing a dream sometimes means arranging a good future for the parts of your current life that cannot travel with you. Responsible change is not about walking away from obligations; it is about honoring them while moving forward.
How We Plan to Sort Everything
We are approaching the process by giving our belongings a few clear destinations:
- Keep for the boat: Items that are useful, compact, durable, and genuinely suited to life aboard.
- Keep for the RV transition: Essentials we need while preparing the house and shopping for the boat.
- Sell: Valuable items that can help fund the boat purchase, refit, equipment, and cruising reserve.
- Donate or give away: Useful belongings that are better placed with someone who needs them.
- Discard responsibly: Broken, expired, unsafe, or unusable items that should not be passed along.
We expect the first round to be easy. The real challenge will be the second and third rounds, when everything obviously unnecessary is already gone.
Turning Stuff Into Freedom
Every item we sell does two things: it removes something we would otherwise have to store, and it turns an unused possession into part of our sailing fund. A piece of furniture can become safety equipment. An extra television can become part of the solar system. Tools we no longer need can help pay for tools that belong aboard.
Seen that way, downsizing is not simply loss. It is a transfer of resources from our old lifestyle to our new one.
Making Room for What Comes Next
We know there will be moments when letting go feels liberating and moments when it feels overwhelming. We will probably keep a few things that make no practical sense and regret selling a few others. That is part of being human.
Our goal is not to own as little as possible. It is to keep what matters and stop allowing everything else to take up space, money, and attention. We are not emptying our life. We are making room for a bigger one.
